The Rio Open is the largest tennis tournament in South America and the only one to simultaneously gather one stage of the ATP World Tour 500 and WTA International. It is the first ATP World Tour 500 in the history of Brazil and the debut of a stage of the WTA circuit in Rio de Janeiro.

IMX announced in April 2012 the acquisition of Memphis, consisting of an ATP 500 and a WTA International. The first edition took place in February of this year and featured the presence of 2 top 5 (Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer) and 5 top 20 in the world. There were 8 days of events, 150 athletes involved, 125 games played, 350 accredited journalists and broadcast to 105 countries.

Spanish Rafael Nadal was the great champion, raising the 62nd of his brilliant career. The world number 1 defeated the Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov by 2 sets to 0, with partial of 6/3 and 7/6 (7-3). With the result, he equaled the Argentinean Guillermo Vilas, seventh player with more bowls in the curriculum at Open Era.
